A fast-talking rhymer with a supernatural sense of rhythm, Atlanta’s Yung Mal is quickly becoming one of his city’s best young emcees. Taking the time to comment on his meteoric rise, Mal shares “Goin’ Up,” his latest video. Annihilating a flute-laden instrumental from esteemed producer Pyrex Whippa, the Zone 6 native stacks flex after flex with a rock-steady cadence: “Not too many I can trust, I let those rubber bands bust/I got money Ion even touch, that sh*t collecting dust.” In the video, directed by ShotByWolf, Mal makes the most of his trip to NYC (the setting of his recent “Cocaine Freestyle” clip, directed by Qasquiat), causing a scene in front of the Washington Square arch with his drip and his dance. Recently included on Spotify’s Get Turnt playlist, “Goin’ Up” is the latest video from Mal’s acclaimed 6 Rings mixtape, which earned praise in HYPEBEAST and XXL. Enjoy this video stream below after the jump and please share this with friends.
Created in collaboration with Pyrex Whippa, 6 Rings is an excellent showcase for Mal’s effortlessly intricate rhymes, which weave within swinging hi-hats and entrancing flute loops. The 24-year-old rapper is an expert at finding unique rhythmic pockets within the beat, frequently messing with listener’s expectations of meter and the bar line. A favorite of the new generation of Southern rappers (DaBaby, Young Thug, Offset, Lil Gotit, Dreamville), the Baltimore-born Pyrex is a perfect fit for Mal’s style, offering a diverse variety woozy trap instrumentals on which the young rapper can perfect his flexes. The new project hosts video singles like “Shut Up,” featuring Lil Gotit and Lil Keed, the Doe Boy co-starring “Blake Griffin,” and the insular “100 Missed Calls.” Featuring an additional appearance from Mal’s frequent rhyme partner Lil Quill, 6 Rings is available everywhere via Alamo Records.
Mal is quickly building an audience on streaming services, with over 650k monthly listeners and inclusion on the service’s Get Turnt, Most Necessary, and Realest Down South playlists. He recently earned a nomination for the XXL Freshman 10th Spot. With 6 Rings, Mal looks to enjoy a breakout year and propel himself into ATL’s A-list.
